Data Engineering Future Technologies (DEFT)

DEFT is the forward-looking track of the IEEE International Conference on Data Engineering (ICDE). It exists to give the data engineering community a place to put revolutionary ideas on the table — visions of where our field is going, long before the systems that realize them have been built.

About the track

DEFT was created in 2023, at ICDE 2023 in Anaheim, as an experiment: a special track distinct from the Research and Industry & Applications tracks, dedicated entirely to innovative, forward-looking ideas. The experiment worked. DEFT has run at every ICDE since, and is now a standing track of the conference with its own steering committee.

Our field is growing in several directions at once. New systems with new capabilities appear constantly, database technologies keep finding their way into domains nobody designed them for, and data science — curation, wrangling, cleaning, and everything around it — continues to expand. The community has adapted its venues to keep up. DEFT is ICDE’s answer: a track whose objective is to look forward and articulate near-term visions for data engineering and analytics.

DEFT submissions are position papers. They are expected to give a well-articulated problem statement and motivation to set the stage, sketch a solution space, and possibly report preliminary studies. They may be speculative. They need not be perfect. They must be thought provoking and grounded in science and technology. Two broad categories recur in our calls for papers, though neither is meant to be exhaustive:

  • Vision papers — use cases and scenarios that push past the limits of existing systems, articulating why the use case matters, where current technology falls short, and what direction the future should take.
  • Expanding the landscape — database technologies applied in novel ways to problems in other domains, and emerging applications built around data itself, from data pricing and data markets to entirely new data-centric settings.

Papers better suited to the traditional research, data science, or industry  tracks should be submitted there instead.

A very senior program committee

What distinguishes DEFT is who reads the papers. Each year the track assembles an eclectic program committee drawn from the most senior members of the data management community. In recent years a majority of the chairs and PC members have been ACM SIGMOD Edgar F. Codd Innovations Award winners, including Turing Award winners.

For authors this means something unusual: DEFT is not only a venue to share a vision of the challenges facing future data systems, it is an opportunity to have that vision read closely and argued with by the people who built the field.

A track and a celebration

DEFT is not only an innovation track for our community — it is also a celebration of it. From the very first edition, when the track’s opening session doubled as a celebration of Mike Carey’s contributions to database research on the occasion of his retirement, DEFT has paired looking ahead with honoring the careers that got us here.

DEFT sessions are plenary, run approximately two hours, and are normally scheduled on day 1 or day 2 of the ICDE conference. The typical structure is:

  • First half hour — a celebration of the career of a retiring or senior member of the data engineering community.
  • Remainder of the session — presentation of the papers selected by the DEFT program committee.

Because the sessions are plenary, all ICDE attendees are in the room. That is deliberate: these are the conversations the community should be having together.

Steering committee

The DEFT steering committee oversees the continuity of the track across ICDE editions, appoints the program committee chairs, and maintains the bylaws below.

Program committee chairs

Each edition of DEFT is led by two to three PC co-chairs. One co-chair rotates out each year, so that the track always carries institutional memory from the previous edition while bringing in a fresh perspective.

Submissions by program committee members

PC members can, and are actively encouraged to, write and submit papers to DEFT. The senior researchers who evaluate visions of the future should also be putting forward their own.

Papers by PC members must be submitted double blind, with anonymized authors. Because the DEFT PC is small, the chairs may additionally recruit reviewers from the main ICDE program committee for papers co-authored by DEFT PC members, to further protect the anonymity of the reviews.

Standing submission limits. Each person may be an author on only one DEFT submission per year. Papers are 6–12 pages, double column, IEEE format — and we recommend staying much closer to 6 than to 12. Exact deadlines, submission links, and the year’s committee are announced in each edition’s call for papers.
